In a significant move to uplift local industries and promote innovation, the Sangguniang Bayan of the Local Government Unit of Lasam (LGU-Lasam) has passed Ordinance No. 2025-001, mandating the use of a new tinupig packaging material developed by Cagayan State University- Lasam Campus.

A formal communication dated April 7, 2025, the ordinance, which was approved during the council’s 2nd Regular Session on February 10, 2025, was transmitted to CEO Florante Victor M. Balatico, underscoring the active role of the academic institution in local economic transformation.

According to the ordinance, the packaging material is designed to enhance the presentation, safety, and marketing of tinupig, a traditional rice delicacy that is a cultural and economic staple of Lasam. The new packaging includes essential details such as nutritional facts, safety seals, production information, and the trademark “Pride of Lasam.”

With the full support of CEO FVMB, the campus’ group of faculty researchers who spearheaded the said project were Asst. Prof. John Carlo L. Banan, Asst. Prof. Cherry C. Sanut, Asst. Prof. Manuelito Musni, and Inst. Leonida G. Paat with their research study titled “Development of Tinupig Enhanced with Cacao and its Packaging.”

This partnership between the LGU and the campus is expected to set a benchmark in region-driven and research-based economic programs while preserving the rich food culture of Cagayan Valley.
